Frequently Asked Questions

A garden designer brings together the practical, aesthetic and horticultural aspects of a garden to create an outdoor space that works as a whole. This includes the layout of the garden, planting, materials, levels, structures, lighting and how the space will actually be used.My approach goes beyond producing a set of drawings. With over 15 years of experience in garden design, together with a background in interior architecture and extensive knowledge of plants and garden construction, I design gardens that are both considered and buildable.I look at the garden as a complete space and, importantly, consider how the design will translate from drawing to reality. This helps reduce compromises during construction and can avoid unnecessary costs later in the process.

Experience is a significant part of what I bring to a project. I have over 15 years of experience designing gardens, working across a wide range of domestic and private non-domestic projects.I combine design expertise with detailed knowledge of planting and construction. This means I can think through how a garden will look, how it will function, what plants will thrive there and how the landscaping can actually be built.I also have established relationships with trusted landscape contractors and specialist suppliers for irrigation, garden lighting and other elements of a project. Where appropriate, I coordinate these different parts of the build so that the finished garden feels coherent rather than like a collection of separate elements.

Absolutely. Every garden is designed around the people who will use it, rather than following a set style or formula. Some clients want a contemporary garden, while others prefer something more traditional, naturalistic or informal. The style is led by you, your property and the way you want to use the space. My role is to bring all of those requirements together into a garden that feels cohesive, practical and personal.

Yes. I have experience across a broad range of domestic and private non-domestic projects.Residential work includes a wide variety of different starting blocks, from small front garden planting schemes to large scale garden design spanning across acres of land, while my non-domestic experience has included specialist spaces within healthcare settings and charitable projects. For example, I have designed gardens at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, including a staff garden, an ICU garden and a mourning and reflection garden for grieving parents. I have also designed the Amy Winehouse Foundation Garden. This breadth of experience has given me the ability to approach projects of very different types, scales and requirements.
